Bloomsday June 16th 2022

June 16 is Bloomsday, the day in the fictional life of Leopold Bloom immortalised by James Joyce in Ulysses. One of the characters in the book is "Stately, plump Buck Mulligan...”, a character based on Joyce’s University friend Oliver St. John Gogarty.

Gogarty gives us several excuses to celebrate Bloomsday as a Society. He was a surgeon, he spent his last years in New York City, where he became a member of the New York Celtic Medical Society, and he was trained as an ENT surgeon by Sir Robert Woods.

On June 16, current NYCMS member Robbie Woods will give a talk to members about his famous ancestor Sir Robert Woods, a groundbreaking early 20th century Laryngology/Otology surgeon in Ireland, and for the day that’s in it will describe his interactions with Gogarty.
